Novatel Inseego MiFi 8000L User Manual
A complete guide to SIM card preparation, first startup, Wi-Fi connection, WEB interface access, signal checking, and proper use of external 4G MIMO antennas.
1. Preparing the SIM card and router for use
Before installing the SIM card into the router, check the following:
- The SIM card must be active.
- Mobile internet must be enabled and working on the SIM card.
- It is recommended to test the SIM card in a phone first.
- PIN code verification must be disabled.
Procedure
- Turn off the router.
- Open the rear cover.
- Remove the battery.
- Insert the SIM card into the slot.
- The SIM card must be inserted with the gold contacts facing down.
- Insert the battery back into the device.
- Close the cover.
- Charge the device beforehand if needed.
- Press and hold the power button.
- Wait until the router finishes starting up.
2. Connecting to Wi-Fi
After the router starts, connect your phone, laptop, tablet, or other device to the MiFi 8000L Wi-Fi network.
Procedure
- Turn on the MiFi 8000L.
- On your phone, laptop, or tablet, open the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
- Find the network created by the router.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
Where to find the network name and password
- In the router menu: Wi-Fi Name/Password.
- If the information is not shown on the screen — under the cover near the battery.
3. What is shown on the router screen
The MiFi 8000L screen displays the main operating parameters of the device:
- signal level indicator shown as bars;
- network type, for example LTE or 3G;
- current battery charge level;
- basic device operating status.
4. How to evaluate signal level
A higher number of bars on the screen usually means better reception. But the assessment should be based not only on “bars”, but also on actual internet stability.
If the signal is weak
- move the router closer to a window;
- try another location inside the room;
- check where the device works more stably;
- use an external 4G MIMO antenna if needed.
5. Connecting an external 4G MIMO antenna
The Novatel Inseego MiFi 8000L supports external 4G MIMO antennas through two TS9 adapters.
Procedure
- Connect the external antenna to the router via TS9 adapters.
- Connect both cables of the MIMO antenna.
- Make sure the connectors are inserted firmly.
- Do not allow tilting, bending, or mechanical stress on the TS9 connectors.
6. Placement and aiming of a stationary 4G MIMO antenna
The correct antenna installation location directly affects the result. Improper installation can reduce the benefit of the antenna almost to zero.
Installation recommendations
- The antenna should be installed outside the building.
- The recommended height is at least 1 meter above roof level.
- There should be no walls, roofing, or metal structures nearby.
- The antenna should not be installed behind a window or inside a room.
Antenna aiming
- During installation, do not fully tighten the mounting hardware at first.
- The antenna should be able to rotate easily for further aiming.
- Aim the antenna roughly toward the operator’s base stations.
- You can aim the antenna toward a nearby settlement or the operator’s towers.
- Gradually rotate the antenna horizontally.
- After each rotation, wait 20–30 seconds.
- Check internet speed and stability.
- Fix the antenna in the position that gives the best result.
What to evaluate
- connection stability;
- actual download speed;
- actual upload speed;
- absence of sharp speed drops;
- RSRP, SNR, and Band parameters in diagnostics.
7. Connecting a magnetic 4G antenna
A magnetic 4G antenna can be used both in a vehicle and as a stationary solution, but only with proper installation.
In a vehicle
- The antennas should be installed on a metal surface.
- It is recommended to place them at the highest point of the roof.
- A metal roof improves antenna operating conditions.
In an apartment or house
- The antennas should preferably be mounted outside the building.
- Indoor installation often sharply reduces efficiency.
- Simply placing the antenna on an indoor windowsill does not always produce a result.
8. Accessing the WEB interface
The router settings are accessed through the WEB interface.
Login procedure
- Connect to the MiFi 8000L Wi-Fi network.
- Open a browser on your phone, laptop, or computer.
- Enter the following in the address bar: http://my.mifi or 192.168.1.1.
- Log in to the system.
9. Checking signal level in the “Diagnostics” menu
The “Diagnostics” section in the router WEB interface is used to check the quality of the 4G connection.
How to open the diagnostics menu
- Open the router WEB interface.
- Log in.
- On the main page, click “Settings”.
- Open the “About Device” section.
- Go to the “Diagnostics” tab.
10. Which parameters to check in the “Diagnostics” menu
For practical antenna setup, first check the following values:
| Parameter | What it means | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| RSRP | The main indicator of received 4G signal level. | The closer the value is to -80 dBm, the better. Values around -110 dBm and lower indicate a weak signal. |
| SNR / SINR | The ratio of useful signal to noise. | The higher the value, the better. A low value means the signal is weak or heavily affected by noise. |
| Band | The frequency band currently used by the router. | Helps identify which network and frequency the device connected to during antenna setup. |
11. How to use this data when setting up the antenna
- Install the antenna.
- Open the “Diagnostics” menu.
- Gradually rotate the antenna.
- After each position change, wait 20–30 seconds.
- Watch how RSRP and SNR change.
- Mark the position where the signal is better.
- Additionally check the real internet speed.
- Fully tighten the mount only after selecting the best position.
12. What affects internet speed
Mobile internet speed depends not only on the router or antenna. The result is affected by:
- signal level in the specific location;
- signal quality and noise level;
- distance to the base station;
- obstacles between the antenna and the base station;
- frequency band used by the router;
- operator base station load;
- SIM card, tariff plan, and operator network capabilities;
- correct antenna installation and aiming.
13. When an external antenna can be useful
- in a village or outside the city;
- at a country house;
- in a private house with poor reception;
- in locations where the router shows weak signal;
- when the internet works unstably;
- when speed changes significantly depending on the router location;
- for vehicles, mobile sales points, temporary sites, or backup internet.
14. When an antenna may not help
- if there is no operator coverage at the location at all;
- if the base station is heavily overloaded;
- if the antenna is installed indoors;
- if the antenna is not aimed toward the base station;
- if there are metal structures, walls, or other obstacles nearby;
- if an unsuitable cable is used or the adapters are damaged;
- if the problem is not the signal, but the tariff plan, SIM card, or operator restrictions.
Brief summary
The Novatel Inseego MiFi 8000L should be configured step by step: check the SIM card, connect to Wi-Fi, open the WEB interface, evaluate the signal in diagnostics, and only then choose the location or direction for the external 4G MIMO antenna. The best result comes not from simply connecting an antenna, but from correct installation, proper aiming, and testing real speed in the specific location.
